Sizing by BTU
As a rough guide, 5,000 to 6,000 BTU cools a small bedroom, 8,000 to 10,000 BTU covers a large bedroom or small living room, and 12,000 BTU and up handles open spaces. Rooms with lots of sun or high ceilings need more. You can also shop by BTU. For whole-home or multi-room cooling, compare mini split systems.
