BTU (British Thermal Units) measures how much heat an air conditioner can remove from a room each hour. Choosing the right BTU rating is the most important part of buying an air conditioner: too small and it runs constantly without cooling the room, too large and it cycles on and off, leaving the air damp. Quick BTU sizing guide
- 5,000 to 6,000 BTU: about 150 to 250 sq. ft., such as a small bedroom or office.
- 8,000 to 10,000 BTU: about 300 to 450 sq. ft., such as a large bedroom or small living room.
- 12,000 to 14,000 BTU: about 450 to 700 sq. ft., such as a living room or studio apartment.
- 18,000 BTU and up: large open spaces, or several connected rooms.
